So you want to be a PR Star?

I honestly believe that everything happens for a reason and from this point onwards, I should forewarn you that I probably say this many more times in the posts to come. It was during my time as a Marketing Student that I came across a substitute teacher that was filling in for a week that taught another subject - Public Relations. Now the allure of PR was not instant, I thought I was all set for the marketing world and that was that. A few classes later, I found out that not only was PR a form of marketing, it also involved events. There were so many types of PR that you could do as well like Public Affairs, Media Relations and different industries…including working with fashion. Sign me up I said!

Well, maybe it wasn’t those exact words but it was here that the allure of PR did come into play. Turns out, this course not only had a work placement component so I could learn PR on the job but it also gave me the equivalent of a full year off a three-year Bachelor of Communications Degree.

What the F#*k? Seriously? How had I not been told about this before? Needless to say, I enrolled for the following year to see if PR was really something I could sink my teeth into and hopefully also tie in my experience with Events and Hospitality as well.

To quote DWP, I landed work placement for a job that ‘many girls would kill for’ working as an intern for none other than the talented and amazing PR Queen Roxy Jacenko at her company Sweaty Betty.

What was meant to be a 40 hour assignment turned into a fabulous six month internship, where I would catch the 5.15am train for Central Station and then make the switch to head to Green Square Station and walk to no. 52 Queen Street, Beaconsfield, every Wednesday for six months. Where I could, I would also try and do the odd Friday if I didn’t have to work that night. I absolutely loved every minute of it!
