Big City Dreamer
After I completed my Diploma, I was accepted into The University of Newcastle to undertake a Bachelor of Communications. I decided I would specialise in Public Relations and as part of my final year I would be required to carry out another internship. I did two. One was local, interning for a children’s magazine writing about eco-friendly products. The second took me back to Sydney working for another well known PR agency, The Wonderland for Gill Lawrence.
Now, the thing to note here is that this version of ‘Cat’ was obsessed with celebrity gossip, fashion, music and her T-Mobile Danger Hip Top/Sidekick. She was a walking 2000’s billboard. I look back now and sometimes wish I could still be like her - loving life, dreaming big, going with the flow.
She was also unrealistic, broke AF and wanted to live a champagne life on a beer budget. The bubble for moving to the big smoke and making PR a reality soon burst when I worked out just how much it was to rent a room in Sydney and that finding a company that would take you on even at entry level with no experience was like pushing s#!t uphill.
Unfortunately, back home there was no fashion PR powerhouses to look for and I was too green and young to think I could pack up and move to Melbourne or Gold Coast to try my luck there. So my PR dreams came to a grinding halt.
